In honor of bike to work day this Friday, let’s look at some sobering numbers. When you calculate the cost of gas, tires, oil, and car maintenance- as the good people at Life Hacker have done- the average American ends up spending $0.17 per mile.
Considering that we drive approximately 10,658 miles per year, that’s $1,811.86 you spend per year just on the cost of commuting.
Driving’s More Expensive Than You Know
Nobody’s able to give up the road at the drop of a nozzle. But you might consider giving yourself a holiday from it. Again from the Foundation for Traffic Safety, Americans spend roughly 279 hours per year on the road. It’s enough to equal the travel time and rate between California and Moscow, Russia. But more.
In addition, there’s the general stress of commuting. Driving more than 10 miles to and from each day has been associated with high blood sugar and increased cholesterol according to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The University School of Medicine in Saint Louis found a connection between commuting and risk of depression. Meanwhile, the UK’s Office of National Statistics found a correlation between commuting and anxiety.
That’s not even counting a bunch of other Universities doing their own research on commuting’s association to increased blood pressure, sleep disruption, back pain, and cardiovascular fitness. Ruh Roh!
Save $5 a Day on a Bike Route to Work
Keep in mind, no one is saying “commuting kills!”. More like ‘commuting hurts under the right conditions’.
With that in mind, bikes can be had for cheap. Even a good bike can potentially run you between $100-200. The cost of bicycle essentials (such as a helmet, fenders, gloves, racks, and lights for evening use) can run up to $300.
That sounds like a lot. And it is. But consider this. Added up, in this parallel universe where you’ve got the bike of your dreams and all the equipment to go with it, you’ve spent around $500. That’s equal to the amount of money you will spend after just a little over three months on the road. Again, that’s just the cost of maintenance. That doesn’t even take into account insurance, accidents, and car failure.
We all love our cars. But we all need a vacation from things. Do yourself a favor and take a vacation from commuting too.
