With Fiesta coming to an end on April 30th, you might think there’s nothing left to do because your wallet is holding nothing but business cards you politely accepted and never intended to use. Maybe because you were the victim of the parking ticket scam we warned you about. Maybe you forgot to budget for your oysters, like we told you. But fear not. You can still have fun this fiesta weekend with three free events you can go to even though you’re broke.
Fiesta De Los Reyes at Market Square (April 29)
From 10:00 am to midnight, Fiesta De Los Reyes on Commerce St. offers the usual array of good food, good music, and good company. Tejano music is offered here to provide Fiesta goers the unique slice of Texas you can only get from its blend of Mexican-American culture, and Matthew “Alright, Alright, Alright” McConaughey*.
If Tejano isn’t quite your thing, and you still haven’t learned the Cumbia, other bands are likely to offer you covers of your favorite rock classics. In addition, proceeds go to LULAC. It’s rare to have a good time for a good cause, so have your fiesta cake and eat it too!
Healthy Choices Conference (April 30)
Even though Fiesta offers plenty of good times, there’s no reason to avoid smart times even during a celebration. From 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm, the West End Baptist Church in the Robert E. Brown Educational Building on Culebra presents their Healthy Choices Conference.
The Healthy Choices Conference is primarily a place for teens to discuss the issues that burden them. Whether with respect to mental health, suicide, and obesity, this conference is a place for teenagers and their peers to feel united in becoming masters of their qualities. Teenagers are singular beyond the general trouble with hormones. Even at the level of the brain, they are at a unique neural market of buying into negative influences or positive drives. The conference is open to the public, so take advantage of discussing tough issues among the city’s good vibes.
Festival De Cascarones (April 30)
If you missed NIOSA, Oyster Bake, or maybe you didn’t and your lust for chicken, nachos, and music is infinite, then check out Festival de Cascarones. From 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm, One University Way provides Fiesta one of its fasted growing events sponsored by one of its fastest growing universities.
